What computing services are available in the cloud?

Cloud services cover a vast range of options, from  data storage, networking, and processing power as well as standard office applications. Any technology service that doesn’t require a business to physically close to the  hardware that a business is using can now be delivered via the cloud.

What are examples of cloud services ?

The Cloud supplies a vast number of services and  is becoming the default option for many apps: software vendors are increasingly offering their applications as services over the internet.Officve applications, accouting software, engineering platforms are just some of thye examples of use of cloud computing.

Why is it called cloud computing?

The concept behind cloud services is that the location of the service, and many of the details such as the hardware or operating system on which it is running, are largely irrelevant to the user. This is an over-simplification of course; for many customers location of their services and data remains a key issue.

What is the history of cloud computing?

In the 1960’s, computer bureaus would allow companies to rent time on a mainframe, rather than have to buy one themselves and this was know as ‘time-sharing’ services.

The concept of renting access to computing power has resurfaced again in the application service providersin the  early 2000’s. This was followed by cloud computing, which really took hold with the emergence of software and data storgae  as a service and large cloud computing providers such as Amazon or Google Web Services.

How important is the cloud?

It is believed that building the infrastructure to support cloud computing now accounts for more than a third of all IT spending worldwide .Spending on traditional, in-house IT continues to slide as computing workloads continue to move to the cloud.

Demand for cloud services is coming from two sources:

1. businesses that actually want to move to the cloud

2. vendors who now only offer cloud versions of their products.

Some cloud services jargon

Cloud computing can be broken down into three cloud computing models.

1. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

2.Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)

3. Software-as-a-Service?

SaaS  will remain  the dominant cloud computing model in the medium term moving forward. Microsoft’s Office 365 is an example of cloud software.

Cloud computing benefits

Fundamentally businesses  using cloud services means they are  not having to buy or maintain their own computing infrastructure.

Buying servers, updating applications or operating systems, or  disposing of hardware or software when it is out of date, is a thing of the past.Using cloud services means companies can move faster on projects without lengthy procurement and big upfront costs, because firms only pay for the technology resources they consume. Moving to a technology services model also moves spending from capital expenditure to opeting costs model , which could have taxation benefits as well.

Cloud advantages/ disadvantages

Advantages

  1. Reduced IT costs.
  2. Scalability
  3. Flexibility of work practices
  4. Access to automatic updates

Disadvantages.

1.migrating existing data or apps to the cloud may be  more complicated and expensive

2.Shortage of company staff with cloud skills.

3.Using the same applications as a competitor, making it hard to create any competitive advantage

A business case for cloud services for your business ?

To build a business case for moving to the cloud as a platform you need to understand what your existing infrastructure actually costs.

  1. cost of running a data centers
  2. extras such as leased lines.
  3.  cost of physical hardware servers
  4.  the cost of storage.
  5. cost of applications
  6. include people costs(training)

Any cloud business case should also factor in the risk of being locked into oneprovider for your technology infrastructure. Any move to the cloud needs to be done on a cost benefit basis.

What about cloud security?

Cloud security refers to the discipline and practice of protecting cloud computing environments, applications, data, and information. Cloud security entails securing cloud environments against unauthorized use/access, distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks, hackers, malware, and other risks

Cloud security tools can identify fraudulent use of data in the cloud, unauthorised downloads, and malware. Typically firewalls and virus scanners kept up to date against the latest threats to your IT environment should come with a strict security platform.

Which are the big cloud computing companies?

There are really only a few giant cloud providers. Leading the way is

  1. Amazon Web Services(AWS)
  2. Microsoft’s Azure
  3. Google
  4. IBM
  5. Alibaba.
  6. Oracle

The cloud giants have different strengths. While AWS and Microsoft’s commercial cloud businesses are about the same size, Microsoft includes Office 365. In addition  IBM, Oracle, Google and Alibaba all have sizeable cloud businesses.

The future of cloud computing?

Cloud computing is still at a relatively early stage of adoption, despite its long history.  Moving to the cloud can help companies rethink business processes and accelerate business change.

Cloud computing is powerful and expansive and will continue to grow in the future and provide many benefits. Cloud computing is extremely cost-effective and companies can use it for their growth. The future of cloud computing is bright and will provide benefits to both the host and the customer.

Conclusion

As businesses get more complex, manual processes and systems become increasingly error-prone and risky, not to mention expensive and slow. Technology can help automate, streamline, and refine, giving valuable team members the space they need to do meaningful, high-value work.Getting buy-in for it, buying the right tool, and then seeing that business impact, though, is far from simple.

Remember that successful technology implementation requires a broader focus on process and organisational design. To achieve business value, consider how the technology change will drive changes in your metrics and support models.Get our Free EBook on how to leverage your IT services in business:
